From health apps to robotic doctors, the digital revolution has arrived.

During Dubai Investment Week, Hough Gough, CEO of Cigna EMEA and Head of Health Solutions, participated in a panel discussion on the impact of technology on the healthcare sector. It seems that both health insurers and their customers are welcoming the changes.

Experts predict a trillion dollar impact on healthcare.

A 2015 study by McKinsey & Co. estimated that the impact of the internet of things on the healthcare industry will grow exponentially. Currently, it’s impact is US $170 billion. By 2025, the number is predicted to be US $1.1 trillion. Breakthrough in health apps, robotics, big data and artificial intelligence are becoming a daily occurrence.

Dubai leads the world in smart health care application readiness.

A study conducted by Royal Phillips ranks Dubai as #1 for health care application readiness. Adoption of new technologies is vitally important in healthcare. In other sectors, technology is used to increase efficiency and convenience. In healthcare, it can reduce costs and save lives.

Consumers are embracing technology—and are eager for more.

Every year, Cigna conducts an annual 360° well-being survey to measure people’s perceptions of health and well-being. When asked about digital healthcare, the results were eye-opening:

78% of respondents believe the use of digital technology in healthcare has the potential to bring good health to more people
67% would be happy to use a ‘robotic doctor’ if the cost is much lower than a human doctor
68% would be happy to have a surgical operation performed with a robot-assisted doctor
13% of respondents have experienced a remote checkup with an actual doctor, and an additional 19% will consider it in the next 12 months

Cigna is embracing it too—and investing heavily.
