As Ramadan begins, Muslims in the UAE will transition into a spiritual and lifestyle transformation. With this comes a responsibility for employers, who have to be particularly mindful of the physical and psychological pressures on those partaking in the holy month, in the midst of the harsh summer months.

Fatigue, headaches, irritability and lack of focus are all common symptoms experienced by those who are fasting. With a few precautions, companies can do their part to support their employees during Ramadan.

Here’s how you can raise health awareness among your employees at work:

  • Wellness campaigns. Roll out a series of health awareness sessions on how to stay physically and mentally healthy during Ramadan, with the guidance of nutritionists and general practitioners. Carrying out free health screenings is also a good option to consider, as fasting for long periods of time can adversely affect sugar levels. An effective wellness campaign can help employees learn about the best eating habits to adapt to, suitable exercises, and how to make the best of stressful situations during Ramadan.
  • Offer flexible hours and staff cover. While it is typical for businesses to slow down during Ramadan, it is recommended to plan ahead if it is anticipated to be a busy month. Accordingly, the workflow should be managed efficiently across team members, with special being taken to offer staff cover for those working overtime1. Offering flexible hours so that employees can have adequate rest before arriving to work will help employees manage their energy levels.
  • Encourage inclusiveness and open discussion. Circulating company newsletters and putting up posters around the office about Ramadan can aid to sensitize all employees, particularly those unfamiliar with the holy month, to encourage one another.
