BUILDING HEALTH INSURANCE AND WELLNESS AS A VALUE-ADDITION TO THE EMPLOYEE COMPENSATION & BENEFITS PACKAGE

While the concept of wellness is now common in workplaces in many parts of the world, including the Middle East, what constitutes a health and well-being program is changing.

During the Compensation & Benefits Forum held on 16th April, 2018, Art Cozad, CEO of Cigna Insurance Middle East, spoke about the changing landscape of health and well-being at work, and how wellness has moved from a ‘nice-to-have’ to a strategic human capital management tool. In fact, well-being programs can allow for a 25 percent reduction in sick leave absenteeism, enabling an active and happier workforce. He also highlighted that companies are 2.5 times more likely to be a top performer - with employees 8 times more likely to be engaged. There is no doubt that wellness programs as part of the health benefits package form a crucial part of the happiness of the workforce, and also play an important role in the preventative approach.

He outlined six key factors companies need to look at when developing a health and wellness program:

1. Build a wellness culture – demonstrate that there is enthusiasm for wellness among senior executives and recruit grassroots level support.

2. Ask your employees – base your program on what’s really needed, through initial and regular evaluation.

3. Think holistic – ensure your program looks at all aspects of health and wellness, including physical, emotional and financial.

4. Provide health and wellness assessments – so employees can track their own health.

5. Take advantage of the latest technology – online resources, wearable and smart device apps will make the program more accessible.

6. Finally, communicate – ensure all employees know about the program and how to access benefits.
